04/11/2019 - Pairs project
For the 'pairs' project I was assigned a partner from fashion to create a collaborative project based on an exhibition we found interesting, my partner and I went to the Tate modern to see the Nam June Paik and Dora mauer exhibition, we went toghter and each picked out our favourite aspects.
I was really drawn to the visual confusion that Paik creates with his videos, by layering and glitching a series of footage together it created a new narrative and you could see less individual figures and more colour blocks. I wanted to create this visual confusion in my work. My partner really liked the sounds of the exhibitions, by layering footage the audio also became very jumbled and confusing so she wanted to embed this into our project. These two ideas linked well together and we were looking into how you can create textiles or a garment that makes noise as you move. I think that our collaboration is successful so far, we have been able to merge our ideas and show each other new ways at looking at things. Without her I probably never would have thought about looking at the noise and translating it into textiles.
Action plan for Tuesday:
- Bring in materials that make noise so that we can record them and make a video out of them as one of our outcomes. We can then overlay the sounds and try and translate the materials into textiles.
- Create my own example of visual confusion by overlapping my own images and distorting them so that I can respond to them through drawing and collage.
-Create more drawings on tracing paper so that I can over lap them with my partners drawings and create new patterns.
07/11/2019 - Pair project
Today was the presentation day for our pairs project and I was mostly disappointed with how this project came out, my partner and I had lots of different ideas of where we wanted to take this project and were quite excited at the the possibilities of this project. However, I think we had too may ideas and were not realistic as to how we could realise them.
During the crit when I was looking at other peoples outcomes and I realised that I could have been a lot broader with the outcomes, a lot of pairs created more conceptual outcomes that lean more to fine art. Considering I chose textile because I felt like it was a perfect blend between fashion and fine art but starting the course I felt more pressure to produce more fashion outcomes which is a lesson I will remember continuing with the course.
05/11/2019 - Pairs project
Today was the second day of our pairs projects, yesterday we mainly focused on consolidating ideas and creating collages and observational drawings for our sketchbooks, one technique that we explored was drawing on tracing paper so that we could overlap our sketches and recreate the 'visual confusion' that Nam June Paik creates with video art. We are still working quite well together, what I've found really rewarding is exchanging ideas with my partner, she is an international student so we have had different experiences that we can share with each-other. I have noticed that my partner draws a lot more than I do in my sketchbook, where as I like to start a project by collaging and then incorporating mark making and some drawings, I think that I can learn from here and draw more in my sketchbook.
Today was quite productive as we created a video as one of our outcomes, we found materials that made noise and we and filmed, we then layered the sound in a video and try to look at ways of recreating that sound into textiles or fashion. We had lots of ideas for samples but were struggling on ideas for outcomes, this project is a lot broader for outcomes than usual fashion and textiles projects, I could see people around the room creating sculptors and contextual pieces. It made me slightly anxious that I hadn't done as much work as everyone else and that we only had two days to complete it and we still only had ideas.
I think the part that was the most worrying to me was trying to create samples that make noise, as a newly diagnosed textiles student I felt like I needed to create a knitted or woven piece, which is something Im not that educated on and I told my partner that I could do it by Thursday, which was a bit unrealistic and not fair to her. So, we decided to something a bit more realistic and use our tracing paper drawings and photocopy them to make a outcome Thant can go on the body and makes noise as you walk.
