04/11/2019 - Pairs project

For the 'pairs' project I was assigned a partner from fashion to create a collaborative project based on an exhibition we found interesting, my partner and I went to the Tate modern to see the Nam June Paik  and Dora mauer exhibition, we went toghter and each picked out our favourite aspects.

I was really drawn to the visual confusion that Paik creates with his videos, by layering and glitching a series of footage together it created a new narrative and you could see less individual figures and more colour blocks. I wanted to create this visual confusion in my work. My partner really liked the sounds of the exhibitions, by layering footage the audio also became very jumbled and confusing so she wanted to embed this into our project. These two ideas linked well together and we were looking into how you can create textiles or a garment that makes noise as you move. I think that our collaboration is successful so far, we have been able to merge our ideas and show each other new ways at looking at things. Without her I probably never would have thought about looking at the noise and translating it into textiles.

Action plan for Tuesday:

- Bring in materials that make noise so that we can record them and make a video out of them as one of our outcomes. We can then overlay the sounds and try and translate the materials into textiles.

- Create my own example of visual confusion by overlapping my own images and distorting them so that I can respond to them through drawing and collage.

-Create more drawings on tracing paper so that I can over lap them with my partners drawings and create new patterns.

07/11/2019 - Pairs project

Today was the presentation day for our pairs project and I was mostly disappointed with how this project came out, my partner and I had lots of different ideas of where we wanted to take this project and were quite excited at the the possibilities of this project. However, I think we had too may ideas and were not realistic as to how we could realize them. During the crit when I was looking at other peoples outcomes and I realised that I could have been a lot broader with the outcomes, a lot of pairs created more conceptual outcomes that lean more to fine art. Considering I chose textile because I felt like it was a perfect blend between fashion and fine art but starting the course I felt more pressure to produce more fashion outcomes which is a lesson I will remember continuing with the course.

11/11/2019 - Damien Poulain group project

Today was the first day of our Damien Poulain group project, overall it was a pretty overwhelming and hard day for me. Last week I didn't produce the best project, so I was determined to redeem myself this week and I was excited for this project, I had a really interesting manifesto and had done some interesting collages and sketches. I got put into a group with 3 people I'd never met , I was a bit nervous because I wasn't sure how we would all work together. I think the thing I found the most stressful about this project was I was paired with 3 international students that spoke the same language and were't the best at English. I'm not the best at  explaining myself, so  I found it hard to explain my concepts and ideas in the way they would understand.

I also had a very strong and clear idea of where I wanted this project to go and generally when I work in a group I try to push my own idea, instead of trying to incorporate all our ideas. Looking back I probably didn't make it easier and was thinking about myself more than the team. By the end of the day we hadn't written a new manifesto or a solid idea, which stressed me out even more and I felt like  I was going to have a repeat of last week.

After the lesson one of my group memebers and I went to the library to try and sort out and idea, after talking about it for some time we managed to talk it out and come up with a solid idea and write our group manifesto, we decided to focus on the environment focusing on oil slicks in the ocean and how companies like Shell are polluting the ocean. When we were doing research for this project we found a lot of interesting imagery that could translate well into a banner. Overall I feel a lot more confident about this project and I think today has taught me a lot about working in a team.

Final group manifesto

THE MANIFESTO ON HOW TO STOP THE WORLD FROM TURNING INTO AN OIL SLICK

The world we live in has become increasingly problematic, humans are selfish by nature and often put themselves before anything else, but now our greed and pride has finally caught up to us. Our world is made up of 71% water but right now our oceans are being turned into an illegal dumping ground for corporations , the way these companies operate is pure environmental vandalism. A whole ecosystem is choking on black tar and if that wasn't enough to make you angry, soon we will be living in our own oil slicks, can we really be the smartest animals on the planet if we purposely poison ourselves? I understand that we can't all be Greta Thunburg but we can take steps to contribute to a greater utilitarian ideology we can help secure our future on the planet.

1) Boycott companies like Shell and Total , trade petrol for electric, take ride shares if you have too and walk every once in a while (don't be lazy)

2) Give your old motor oil to oil disposal companies

3) Feel free to vandalise any capitalist Shell propaganda

14/11/2019 - Damien Poulain group project

For our final day of the group project we had to turn our banner into a wearable garment, we had already created a pretty successful banner that I was proud of, but now we had to transform it into something for the body. Working on the body has always been something I have struggled with ,even though fashion is one of the main degrees I am interested in, the real challenge for this task is to keep the concept clear while transforming it for the body. In my original research I was thinking about creating a banner that can transform into a human sponge that could clean up the oil in the ocean, because in my research I found that environmentalists use natural sponges to clean up spills. I also looked into making a hazmat suit our of our banner to protect locals who have to clean up spills on their beaches.

Both of these ideas were quite ambitious and considering we only had the morning to do them, we opted for a similar concept, we decided as a group our favourite element of the banner was the oil canister with the shell logo so we cut it out. Without the the canister the banner only had the shape of the spills.

Overall, I definitely had low points in this project and hardships to overcome, working with my group has taught me a lot about team work and how to incorporate my ideas with others, I'm really pleased as to how this project came out, especially after last weeks project. I gained a new understanding of working with people and learnt how to manage my time more efficiently.

18/11/2019 - Multiples project

My process for our current multiples project started by sourcing materials, I think my first mistake for this project is opting to buy all of my materials rather than look at humble items that I already owned or could have recycled from other people. The artists I looked at such as Moffat Takadiwa sourced all his items from landfills, a lot of the items he used were disposable plastic items such as tooth paste tubes and key board keys. I initially chose similar items to use like toothbrushes, although I didn't ethically source them. I think if I am going to continue using this as a material I could get people to donate their old tooth brushes. For my project I think manipulation was the key theme I wanted to explore in this project, I really wanted to push myself with what I can do with everyday objects, I chose tooth brushes and combs because they are hard materials and would be difficult for me to experiment with.

The session today was mainly focused on drawing, since I only brought one item in today I could only draw from the toothbrushes, drawing is always something that I have struggled with. When I am doing initial research for a project I usually start by collaging and then incorporate mark making. So it was a challenge for me to do such quick drawing, I think that I did create some interesting mark making but I could have pushed it further, I think I was worried about how my book would look and dint let myself experiment enough. My best drawings I did that day were the blind drawings in someone else sketchbook, that was when I really let go and experiment with drawing. I think what today has taught me is that I need a bigger range of objects to develop this project.

24/11/2019 - 'Multiples project'

Today is the start of the second week for our multiples project, last week I had a bit of trouble starting really developing samples but towards the end I started to really generate some interesting ideas. This last week was mostly focused on refining my practice and linking a concept to my work, after researching Richard Mcvetis, I became really interested in how he explores time and repeated processes. A lot of my objects relate to hair e.g. Combs, Flexi rods, toothbrushes ( I use toothbrushes to do my edges) and the sponges I have have similar textures to hair. I thought of  using the techniques we used last week and translating my hair process through mark making, from these drawings I will create samples from my  drawings. One thing I struggled with last week was creating a new material with objects as apposed to decorating, I think this week through weaving I have found a way to create a new fabric and its something I want to continue to develop through my samples.

Action plan before Crit:

- Mark make my hair routine

- Experiment more with weaving with my objects

- Create 10 samples for grit on Thursday

27/11/2019 - 'Multiples project'

Today was my final critique for the multiples project, we were supposed to make 10 final samples outside of our books for this project but I only managed to do 7, however I will say that I was a lot more productive in this project than for any other project I have in any other project. I think that I generated a lot of sketchbook development which is something that I struggled with throughout foundation. I got mostly positive review for this project, I think that I successfully managed to create new materials , from my objects . During our partner feedback:

03/11/2019 - 'Your London'

For our Lino printing session today, I picked out my favourite shapes from my sketches of Finsbury park, I found that I was picking out really fine details rather than big structures, so that I could build them up and create more abstract prints. I really liked the shape of the shutters in store fronts and translated onto a sheet of lino, I also really liked a the shape of signage on store fronts which is leading me in a more graphic approach to this project. I really enjoyed creating lino prints, I think it is an easy way to create collages and really explored layering , in some of my samples I was trying to create a simple repeat pattern but I started to become interested in creating a narrative and I wanted to recreate the everyday scenes of Finsbury park by using my lions to create an abstract version of the pictures I took.

We also experimented with transfer inks and paper, during the actual workshop I didn't create many because I didn't think the outcome of the patterns were as successful as the lino because there was so texture. Its a technique that we used in Sixth form a lot and I never managed to make it look professional enough. However I definitely will generate more samples using this technique because I think I could use them as a good base to them applique, embroider and other textiles techniques to elevate them more. One of the objects I was looking at in my initial drawings was a  tie dye bucket and I was thinking about recreating this pattern using marbling.

06/11/2019 - 'Your London'

The 'your London' project has been quite significant for me, I started this project with out fully understanding the importance of drawing, I know understand that its a key part of the process rather than something you do at just the  beginning of your project. I also developed a deeper understanding of colour.

Before this project people would look at my work and say its 'SOOO COLOURFULLL!!!!!' , for my multiples project I used pastels which worked for my concept and bright saturated colours for my extension project. I always linked the amount of colours I used to the success of my project, which I assumed in my head had to be bright and ' in your face'. From my research in Finsbury park I found a lot of greens and wanted that to be my main colour scheme, but after the Adobe workshop I found that I was drawn to the more muted and subtle colours and opted for olive/dark green and blue grey. I think these colour are show the best with the success of my linos, you can really see the colours work well together. I think this project will help me have more developed projects in the future.Untitled_21012020_105733.jpg

Denim project day 3

Today was focused on the idea of outcomes, I tend to imagine my samples on the body most of the time as fashion is the pathway I want to take. However today was interesting because we had to turn our samples into outcome they could be: sculptors, public installations. architecture etc.. It was interesting to to imagine my samples as a sculptor as it would give it a very different tone to  it being developed into a fashion illustration. Although I dont see myself creating installation outcomes I could still take the shapes I created and apply it to the body or maybe play with the scale to see if i want create smaller repeated versions .

We also did body sized fashion illustrations, I usually struggle with proportion when drawing bodies, so having to create one using only 5 strokes actually helped because I had to be very careful how I placed things. Experimenting with my samples on the body was beneficial because I got some good A2 drawings that I can use in my portfolio.

05/11/2019 - 'Paris project'

Today was the second day of our pairs projects, yesterday we mainly focused on consolidating ideas and creating collages and observational drawings for our sketchbooks, one technique that we explored was drawing on tracing paper so that we could overlap our sketches and recreate the 'visual confusion' that Nam June Paik creates with video art. We are still working quite well together, what I've found really rewarding is exchanging ideas with my partner, she is an international student so we have had different experiences that we can share with each-other. I have noticed that my partner draws a lot more than I do in my sketchbook, where as I like to start a project by collaging and then incorporating mark making and some drawings, I think that I can learn from here and draw more in my sketchbook.

Today was quite productive as we created a video as one of our outcomes, we found materials that made noise and we and filmed, we then layered the sound in a video and try to look at ways of recreating that sound into textiles or fashion. We had lots of ideas for samples but were struggling on ideas for outcomes, this project is a lot broader for outcomes than usual fashion and textiles projects, I could see people around the room creating sculptors and contextual pieces. It made me slightly anxious that I hadn't done as much work as everyone else and that we only had two days to complete it and we still only had ideas.

I think the part that was the most worrying to me was trying to create samples that make noise, as a newly diagnosed textiles student I felt like I needed to create a knitted or woven piece, which is something Im not that educated on and I told my partner that I could do it by Thursday, which was a bit unrealistic and not fair to her. So, we decided to something a bit more realistic and use our tracing paper drawings and photocopy them to make a outcome Thant can go on the body and makes noise as you walk.

My manifesto

THE MANIFESTO ON HOW TO BE AN CAPTIVATING TEENAGER, THE ART OF DEFIANCE AND PROTEST :

- Gen z bible verse 23 chapter 1:17

Hello, fellow teens and Generation Z, I am currently writing to you from a Mac book pro in the library of the second best arts schools in the world, my name is Jamila Leal Fernandes and I am 18 years old. In my 6 long and painful years of teenage hood I have made several detailed observations of how to present ourselves to the world. The term 'teenager' only became common in '1944' and since then we have been notoriously  defiant, rebellious and argumentative , which basically means that no matter what we stand for Piers Morgan will think that we're special snowflakes. The world that we live in today has become increasingly problematic, and in our true argumentative nature we talked back, whether this be in protest, riot, demonstrations or general anarachy and still we struggle to be taken seriously by those above us. Edelweiss pirates (circa Nazi Germany), Kent state 1968, London student protests 2010 and most recently Extinction  rebellion. Our voices deserved to be heard , the kids are not alright and we refuse to be ignored. To my fellow teens I understand that we can't all be Greta Thunberg but we can follow these small steps to practice the art of defiance and captivate the older generation.

1) Make noise wherever you deem nesesscary ( School funding cuts, unjust wars, Instagram algorithms), don't be afraid to shout in the faces of adults

2) Carry a a black or white marker wherever you go in case you need to vandalize capatlist propaganda or private property

3) If you do not aim to be a public figure, create an anonymous instagram account to where you can express your views, preferably pick a slogan and symbol that can be retweeted on twitter

4) If your ever walking in Oxford Circus and you see a mob of young people carrying signs and banners, stop what you're doing and join them immedeatly

5) Protect your future at all costs!!! Stop the adults from making mistakes in their tracks before we have to clean up their messes in the future.

12/11/2019 - Damien Poulain group project

Today I walked into class with a much better mood than Monday, after going to the library with one of my team members and finally writing our group manifesto, I felt a lot more confident with my  idea. When I went home to research oil slicking in the ocean I found a lot of interesting imagery that I developed into sketches and collages. I started to get a lot more excited for our project and our group was starting to become more of a group, I also was glad that I had caught up with book work and had a lot to show my tutors.

Now that we had all done independent research for our concept we had to bring all our ideas together into one coherent banner, we all worked together by cutting out our favourite shapes from our collages and arranging them but when we showed our mock up to the rest of the class it wasn't obvious what it was. Since we were making a statement about illegal oil slicking in the ocean, I thought it would be a good idea to put a shell logo somewhere on our banner. One of our group members cut out the shape of a oil canister and we combined our two ideas, so now our banner was a lot more obvious. For the construction of our banner we all worked together on one individual part and hand stitched it, we used contrasting zigzag stick so the poster looked more home maid. I think that the contrasting stick, elevated the banner a lot more.

IMG_5405.PNG IMG_5412.PNG

I think that as a banner I am quite proud of how it turned out, I think the message is clear the oil canister really represents the idea of illegal oil dumping, and everyone we showed understood the idea. We added a hazard sign onto one of the spills to represent the danger and sinister nature of this crime because it is a form of environmental vandalism by big corporations that most people ignore. One thing I do wish that we had done was played more with the shape of the banner, I saw other groups make banners in different forms which made theirs really interesting, I think for our banner it would have been interesting to create our banner in the shape of a spill.

19/11/2019 - Multiples project

On our second day for our multiples project we focused a lot more on the transforming the objects themselves. Since yesterday I sourced more materials to use for my project I found: sponges, flexi rods, combs, metal rings and tooth brushes. I tried to get a good mix of hard and soft materials so that I could really experiment with this project, my items were a mix of things I bought and had at home which does not make them necessarily sustainable in themselves but a lot of them are items that are easily thrown away after a few uses so by making them into a material I was making them more sustainable in that way.

One key thing I took from today's session is that already need to transform my items rather than just connect things that already exist. For example one of the tasks was to create three individual ways to connect three of our items, I mostly kept the shape of my items as they were but when we did a group walk around and crit, I noticed that people were cutting up their items and shredding. I finally understood that the purpose of this project is too create another material. I think that after seeing everyone's work i needed to look at ways that I can be more creative with my project.

21/11/2019 - Multiples project

Today was my most productive day of the project for me, this week I really struggled with motivation and doing work outside of tutorials, I think because I was hesitant about this project because it will go in my portfolio, found my self working on paper instead of in my book because I was afraid I would mess it up. However today showed me to be more confident in my drawing skills and create more inivative samples.

In my initial research I was looking at the idea of 'multiples' and repetition in a very linear way, for example the repetition in weaving patterns but today we looked at repetition in everyday life. I found this conceptual approach to multiples very interesting, we started by using mark making to draw repeated actions, my favourite drawing i did was of me losing my phone and then checking all my pockets to find them. We then created samples from these drawings, I found creating samples from sketching a lot easier than from the words we were given, some of the words were useful but drawings can influence the shapes that I can transform my objects into. I think moving forward this is how I want to develop my samples.

Also, after 4 days of creating swatches and samples I have began to look at a concept that links to my outcomes, in my research I looked at the history of my objects and a lot of them are linked to hair like my combs and flexi rods, I even use my toothbrush to do my edges. Hair a very important aspect of black culture and comes in many different textures and styles, I researched Yuni Kim Lang who uses textiles to imitate the texture of hair and I think over the weekend I can photograph and mark make from my everyday hair routines and others to create more samples for my concepts.

02/11/2019 - 'Your London' project

Today was the beginning of our 'Your London' print project, I'm quite excited for this project because print is something I've always been interested in and never had the opportunity to do in depth, this project also was a nice break from the multiples project as it would be more drawing and mark making based initially and then i can integrate different materials and textures into the project. I got Finsbury park as my area of London to base my project on and I was really inspired. Its similar to my area of London in the fact that there is a lot of multiculturalism. After researching about the area I found that there is a large homeless population that lives under a bridge on Grange Hill road , so i started drawing from their shelters and I found some interesting shapes which I added to my shape menu. I also looked at store fronts and mannequin heads in hair shops, I found that making a shape menu and a texture menu really benefited me in identifying my favourite elements from my drawings.

One of my preconceptions for this print project was that everything would have to be flat, but from the image manipulation work shop we did I can apply my prints to 3D techniques to make them more interesting, I think that I have made a good start to the project and Im actually quite excited to ove onto lino printing tomorrow.

Denim project day 1

Today is the first day of our denim project , I did a lot of research for inward/outwards over Christmas. One theme I looked at in particular is the Japaneses philosophy 'Kaizen' ,The Japanese word kaizen means "change for better", without inherent meaning of either "continuous" or "philosophy" in Japanese dictionaries and in everyday use. The word refers to any improvement, one-time or continuous, large or small, in the same sense as the English word "improvement". I was looking at it in reference to how much time I spend on my phone a day and active ways I could reduce it I was also looking at how much of myself I have left on the internet with all the time I spent on there. However I was struggling to see ho how I could relate it to denim

Some of the key words I came up with in the session were :

- Progression

- Connect

- Gradual

- 1%

- Tracing

During my crit I realised that I am more interested in the second part of my research and how we leave a digital fingerprint every time we go online. This got me to start thinking about stalking on the internet and how its so much easier to do now with the invention of the internet and even harder to escape from because you can never truly disappear online.

Action plan:

- Research stalking

- Stalk someone in class see how much you can find about them

- See how much you find about yourself by googling

Denim project day 2

The first part of the day was a collage based day using research we had found for our projects, collaging is one of the ways I like to problem solve through my work so I quite enjoyed it. We were asked to create collages based on : a single cut, erasure and connecting two or more images. I found working under these instructions stressful initially  but as we went along I became more comfortable with the idea of working under a time limit because it helps you to think more instinctively. Not all of the collages I created were successful but they created a good basis for me to work into after the session.

thumbnail_Untitled_13012020_114147_001.jpg

The second half of the lesson was really useful for me and is something I wish I had known in earlier projects. We separated our images into categories and then made them into mood boards. From these mood board we took out elements from them and used them as mark making. I found this to be such a useful technique because a lot of times in a project I will start creating samples and shapes that are not visible in my sketchbook but by using this technique I can directly pull out shapes from my research and develop them.

Denim project day 5

Today was crit/ walk around day for the denim project. Ba tutors were coming to visit and I couldn't be more of a mess. I genuinely disappointed in myself for not completing this project to the best of my abilities, I didn't get to make many samples and the ones I did were not as strong. I knew I could do better but I let procrastination take over. I also missed or was late to half of the lessons for the denim project which I should have seen a counselor about ages ago because its just going to get worse.

However the walk around was interesting to see how people manipulated the denim, I realized that I should try and change the texture more by dipping it in paint or latex to make my samples more different. Also I found the advice from the BA tutors quite helpful, I should put my samples on the body more and make samples in other shapes besides squares and rectangles.

Part 2 contextual review

Part 2 assessment:

At the end of my part 1 assessment I was specialised into the textile’s pathway, I found that at the end of the diagnostic period, materials and making were a key part of the work I want to create. During the workshops I was always trying to get outside my sketchbook and make something 3D to express my ideas, since specialising I have been able to expand on this more and make more developed samples, I found myself problem solving through making. However, part 2 has also helped me make lots of revelations about my strengths and weaknesses as a designer. which I can now use to reflect on my process and carry into my final major project, which I hope to showcase my best work.

The first project for part 1 was the ‘Pairs project’, initially I was excited to start with a partner from fashion because I’m interested in creating textiles for the body, so it was fun to see how we could work together on draping and design development. One of the key things I learnt in this project is that research and references from non-textiles/ fashion sources is just as important, the Nam June Paik exhibition we based our project on was really inspiring to me. He used sculptor and film to look at how society was effected by TV and media ,in  his 'TV Garden' exhibition he uses old TV and plants to create a futuristic society where nature and technology are intertwined This piece really resonated with me because it’s a theme that I am interested in, working through the project and creating samples in response to our own ideas taught me how I can translate abstract concepts into textiles. However, my pairs project didn’t run as smoothly as I would have hoped, I think our main problem was we had too many ideas and couldn’t pick one to condense and develop, so in the end we didn’t have a very good outcome. But I took what learnt in my first project into our next group project (Damien Poulain) and it was a lot more successful, we were able to collectively pick an idea and I got to look into a theme that I was passionate about which was the history of protest, using shape and collage we were able to make an effective banner/garment.

Another project that was significant for me was the ‘Your London’ print project, I realised in this project that I wasn’t drawing enough, having just finished the ‘Multiples’ project which was very making and sample based that drawing was apart of the process and not just something you do at the beginning of a project. When I started the project, I wasn’t sure how to turn my drawings into prints and I also wasn’t very keen on it because I thought it would be quiet a flat project. But by creating Lino prints and using transfer inks I was able to create a layers with different textures. I also found that in this project my colour choices matured, I used to think that having and extremely colourful project with bright and neon colours was the key to the success of my project even if it had nothing to do with the concept. In the beginning of my print project I was using more lighter, brighter colours but after revisiting Finsbury park I opted for a more muted tones which really improved my project and created more interesting samples.

This understanding of colour translated into my denim project as well, I started off with traditional indigo and blue palette which I then brought in brown tones. My denim project was definitely my favorite project to research and create samples for, all of my projects so far have ben personal or I find links with myself in them. But in this one I got to explore what kind of person I am and how technology and the internet is changing our society. One problem I faced during this project and probably all my projects is time management, I sometimes find it difficult to meet deadlines because it takes me a while to get really into a project. Which means that when I starts catching, up I have to do double the work. Its something that was affecting my quality of work. Once we start Part 3 I really want to meet objectives I set out on time so that I can create my best work that I can be proud of and be more organised, it’ll also allow me to reflect and improve on projects I do but also help improve my everyday life and mental health.
